Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

4/5 stars

The French didn't consider this a masterpiece for nothing. Though highly-stylized, this is an incredibly layered piece that is totally modern and and almost verging on art film in the heyday of classical studio-style narratives. I basically forgot how genius Nicholas Ray's story and direction were, totally showcasing the performances of its three amazing young stars, all of whom were doomed to die tragically. I also realized that this film was basically remade as Rumblefish, for the 80s. So brill.

I'm glad I revisited this again finally after years since I played Judy (Natalie Wood's character) on stage in high school which was a traumatizing experience since we really butchered the piece execution-style. Anyway, I'm glad my relationship with the film has finally been restored to good health.
